How it works
- Photograph one arm. Open your glasses and photograph the inside of one temple arm, close enough that the small printed text is easy to read.
- Photograph the other arm. The markings are usually split between the two arms — the model and color on one, the size on the other.
- Check and confirm. Escrix shows what it read, in editable fields. You fix anything wrong, confirm, and get a Frame ID you can copy.

How to get a photo that can be read
- Hold the arm 5–10 cm from the camera
- Light from the side — a window or lamp, not straight on
- A dark surface behind the arm, so the text stands out
- A slight angle reads better than straight above

Without a model code or brand there is nothing specific to search for. The measurements alone are shared by many unrelated frames, so Escrix will not offer a search that could point you at the wrong one. Photograph the arm again if the model marking might be legible.
Escrix does not check any shop's stock and does not verify that a search result is really the same frame. Nothing here is a compatibility claim.
What do the numbers on your glasses mean?
Almost every pair of glasses carries its own specification, printed on the inside of the temple arms in text about a millimetre tall. A typical full marking looks like this:

Read left to right, that is the model code, the color code, and the three measurements. Taken together they name one specific frame in one specific finish and one specific size.
- 55 — lens width
- The width of one lens at its widest point, in millimetres. Usually 40–62 mm.
- 18 — bridge width
- The gap between the two lenses, the part that sits over your nose. Usually 14–24 mm. It is the number printed after the small square or dash.
- 145 — temple length
- The length of the arm from hinge to tip, following the bend that goes behind your ear. Usually 120–150 mm.
The measurements alone do not identify a frame. Thousands of different models are made in 55□18 145. Two frames sharing all three numbers can be completely different shapes from different manufacturers. Only the model code and color code name a particular frame — which is why Escrix will not search on the measurements by themselves.
Where to find the model and color code
Open the glasses and look at the inside surface of each arm — the side that faces your head. The information is normally split between the two arms, which is why Escrix asks for a photo of each.
- One arm usually carries the brand name, the model code and the color code. The model code is often a letter-and-number combination such as RB2132 or OX8046.
- The other arm usually carries the three measurements, and often the country of manufacture and the CE or similar mark.
- The color code is the number that follows the model, frequently two to four digits, sometimes with a letter. It is easy to mistake for part of the model code — on many frames they are printed with only a space between them.
- On very small or rimless frames the markings may be on the inside of the bridge or on the arm's tip instead, and are sometimes omitted altogether.
When the markings are worn or half gone
Printed markings rub off with years of handling, and engraved ones fill with skin oil. Two things help more than anything else: strong side lighting that catches the engraving, and a dark background behind the arm. Photograph the arm at a slight angle rather than straight on.
If part of the text is genuinely unreadable, Escrix leaves that field blank rather than guessing. A blank field is an honest answer. You can still confirm the values that were legible, and an optician can often identify the rest from the frame in hand.
What you can do with your Frame ID
- Order new lenses into the frame you already own. If the frame is fine and only the lenses are scratched or your prescription has changed, an optician needs the model, color and size to work with it. This is the most directly useful thing the markings enable.
- Find the same frame again. If you lost or broke a pair you liked, the model and color code let you search for that exact frame rather than something that merely looks similar in a photograph.
- Judge whether another frame will fit like this one. If you already know these glasses sit well, the three measurements give you a reference to compare any other frame against. It is the closest thing to trying before buying — though see the limits below.
- Keep a record. Escrix stores nothing, so copy the Frame ID somewhere of your own: a note, an email to yourself, or a photo of the text.
What Escrix cannot determine
Being clear about this matters more than sounding capable.
- Your prescription. The markings on a frame describe the frame. They contain no information about your eyes, your lens strength, or your astigmatism. Nothing on this page can be read as a prescription.
- Your pupillary distance. PD is a measurement of your face, not of the frame, and it is not printed anywhere on your glasses.
- Whether another frame will fit you. Matching measurements are a useful signal, not a guarantee. Frame shape, the curve of the arms, nose pad design and material all affect how a frame actually sits.
- Whether a shop has it in stock. Escrix checks no inventory.
- Whether a search result is genuinely the same frame. Verify the model code and the color code yourself against the product page. The same model in a different color code is a different product.

Questions people ask here
Why do you need photos of both arms?
Because manufacturers split the information. The model and color are usually on one arm and the measurements on the other. Photographing only one arm gives half an identity, which is not enough to find the frame again.
Why is the brand field usually empty?
Many frames print the model code but not the brand name on the inside of the arm — the brand appears on the outside instead, where the arm markings aren't. Escrix leaves the field blank rather than inferring a brand from the model code, because that inference would sometimes be wrong.
My glasses show 52□18 145. Is that the same as another pair with those numbers?
No. Those numbers describe the size, not the frame. Many unrelated models are made in that size. Same measurements means comparable dimensions, nothing more.
What does the small square between the numbers mean?
It is a separator, not a measurement. The square (□), sometimes printed as a dash, marks the boundary between the lens width and the bridge width. It is called the Digital Eye Size marking and simply tells you the two numbers around it are measured in that standard way.
Can I use this to buy lenses online without an optician?
The frame markings are not enough on their own. Ordering lenses also requires a current prescription, and for many lens types a pupillary distance measured on your face. Escrix can give you the frame half of that, not the eye half.
The reading is wrong. Can I correct it?
Yes, and you should. Every value appears in an editable field before you confirm anything. Escrix treats your correction as the truth, not its own reading.
